Cryosurgery

What is cryosurgery?

It is a surgical technique which uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the abnormal tissue that your doctor would like to remove. When healing is completed, the abnormal tissue will be replaced by normal healthy tissue.

Will it hurt?

It is usually painless due to the freezing technique, although some patients do experience mild uterine cramping (like menstrual cramps).

What should I do after surgery?

Avoid sex for 2-3 weeks due to the watery discharge that occurs as the cervix heals itself. Avoid douches (unless ordered by your doctor) and avoid using vaginal tampons for 2 weeks. You should set up an appointment with your doctor for another pap smear and pelvic exam.
